SALSA

Learning Leadership and Integrity
Student Association of La Sierra Academy (S.A.L.S.A.)

Each year, our high school students elect peers to leadership positions that plan and coordinate events, initiatives and causes across campus. Selected faculty and staff serve as sponsors, mentoring these students as they learn valuable leadership skills.

SALSA’s constitution establishes two bodies:

  • The Executive Committee, made up of students elected into office and selected faculty sponsors.
  • The Student Senate, made up of representatives from each class, club, and on-campus organization.

The Senate meets regularly and provides guidance and advice to the Executive Committee, which in turns applies this advice to the planning and coordination of activities and events that meet the social, academic and spiritual needs of the student body.

Each year, the following events are planned by the Executive Committee of elected student officers:

Spirit Week

To get students involved in teamwork, cooperation and working together in a friendly spirit of competition, Spirit Week has a different theme each day (from dress-down day to pirate day, etc.).

Fundraisers

To allow classes or groups to properly coordinate events, our student leaders are charged with planning engaging fundraising activities that not only help fund enriching activities but that are enjoyable for participants as well. The largest fundraising event each year is the Taste of LSA, set up like a multi-cultural fair with foods, crafts and activities to experience.

Spring and Fall Picnics

The culmination of Spirit Week is in each semester’s picnic, allowing a full day outdoors and more opportunities for teamwork, healthy competition and development of sportsmanship. Classes compete in events—some silly, some requiring specific skill—that allow classes to get to know each student’s strengths and determine how best to work together as a class.

Banquets—Christmas and Junior/Senior

Each year, a formal event with dinner and entertainment provides a different kind of social activity for our students. Faculty, students and staff can get dressed up in their best and attend with their favorite groups of friends or a special someone. These events are held off campus in group event locations all around the Inland Empire.

Annual Handshake

To start each year with a chance for fellowship, reconnecting and making new friends, the Handshake is held on campus with icebreaker activities, casual class competition, and a big line of handshakes and hugs to close out the event and start off a great new school year.

Beach Vespers

Twice each year, SALSA plans a fun-filled outing to close-by beaches for organized activities, food, and an evening worship service. Other students are recruited for help in serving food, helping lead activities, and playing music or speaking during worship. This is a great way to strengthen friendships throughout the year while also creating an opportunity for further spiritual depth in the heartfelt evening worship.
